This New Horror Film Has Debuted on Streaming, and It Has the Power to Test Your Relationship.

Consider this a dare for those in enduring partnerships who appreciate scary movies: Settle in with your significant other and stream Together. This 2025 indie hit has now made its launch on a streaming platform on Hulu. At first glance, it might appear like conventional biological terror, but within Together exists a intense examination about our choices in loving each other.

A Directorial Debut Delving into Relationship Dynamics

Together represents the first full-length movie for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It stars Dave Franco and Alison Brie as Tim and Millie, partners that have been together for ten years. United in marriage in real life in 2017, the two stars infuse a special spark to their characters, skillfully embodying both the strengths and weaknesses of a committed partnership.

The story begins when Millie and Tim transition from the metropolis to the rural area for professional reasons. A commonly used plot device, sure, but that’s largely where the cliches cease. Together transforms into as much a examination of mental states of the partnership as it is a movie featuring biological frights.

A Paranormal Spark

While hiking near their rural residence, a storm hits, and the two tumble into an hole in the earth. After a night spent there and managing to escape, a supernatural entity begins influencing the duo. This force induces a paranormal intimacy between them that goes well past emotional intimacy.

The entire film is a gradually intensifying horror experience, interspersing bits of fever-dream horrors, gross (but not excessively graphic) physical transformations, and surprisingly comedic dialogue (sometimes amidst something disturbing). Michael Shanks weaves these elements together expertly and delivers them in a gradually swelling atmosphere of fear.

Complex Characterizations

A great deal of Together is only the two lead actors, and they deftly portray countless layers to the dynamic between Tim and Millie. Millie's sense of self and emotional bond is deteriorating due to a lack of intimacy. Her underlying frustration of Tim for his hesitance to focus on anything other than his struggling artistic pursuits slowly bubbles to the surface.

In contrast, Tim's character experiences isolation and cut off by Millie, who’s the cause they’ve left the city and far away from his network of friends. He dreads the concept of completely losing his individual identity in his partner. This fear is further exacerbated by the fact he lacks a driver's license and needs Millie for getting around.

The director's cleverest decision in this movie refrains from painting one partner or the other the clear bad guy.

The couple face the type of challenges that arise in any relationship after ten years. Fundamentally, they still love one another. They still laugh together, offer support, and share intimately at times. But under the surface, there’s an persistent current of uncertainty about their future together.

Thematic Depth

While the paranormal elements in Together symbolize these anxieties of codependency and giving oneself over to a partner, the metaphor does not come across as hamfisted or heavy-handed. Instead, these ickier, creepier moments provide a perfect parallel to the character-driven drama. Both the frights and the fights serve the other in harmony.

A Debated Finale

Together’s conclusion, which won’t be spoiled here, has created disagreement on the story's concluding statement about unhealthy partnerships. Reports indicate that those not in relationships have interpreted the film as a compelling reason for remaining unattached. On the other hand, a few pairs having disagreements found that the film ended up guiding them to make up.

Regardless of your relationship status, your own interpretation could potentially serve as a great barometer of how you think about commitment. Will the finale sow a sense of discomfort and fear, or a uplifting feeling of optimism? Will you recognize your own traits in one of the characters and scream at your TV, or simply glance toward your significant other and utter, “We could get through that together”?

Whatever the case may be, Together is an exploration you can embark on at this very moment.

Together is streaming on Hulu's platform at present.
